This jazz combo of Minnesota natives, suitably Below Zero, are among the up and coming players in the Twin Cities jazz scene. Playing jazz standards from the 1950’s and 60’s along with their own funk-jazz compositions they energize the audience with their Below Zero vibe. Meeting for the first time 2 ½ years ago as a jazz combo class directed by saxophonist, Greg Keel, at MacPhail Center for the Arts, they quickly connected as musicians and friends. They have performed several shows at each The Reverie, The Blackdog, Jazz Central Studios, The Warming House, Pepitos, Barely Bros Record Store, community events, and two shows as Andrea Canter’s JazzInc Youth Feature Combo.
The influence of their local teachers permeates their sound. In addition to participating in jazz workshops with Adam Meckler (trumpet), MYJB Jazz Stage Bands, Shell Lake Music Camp, and MacPhail camps and classes, these players study with Bryan Nichols (piano), Jeremy Messersmith (songwriting), Bob Adney (drums), Greg Keel (saxophone), Scott Agster (trombone), and Adam Linz and Chris Bates (bass) and more.
Combo members include Southwest Minneapolis High School students August McKinney (piano), Noah Willhite (saxophone), Jacob Rochell-Share (trombone), Jorgen Linne (bass), and from Totino Grace High School on drums, Nick Adams.
